Empress Maria Feodorovna, was born in 1847 in Denmark and was named princess Dagmar.
She was the 4-th child of king of Denmark Christian IX. Christian IX came to the throne in 1863,
after the death of childless Frederick VII - the last of the Danish Oldenburgs, who occupied the
throne during more than 400 years (from 1448 to 1863). English king Edward VII married her
sister - Alexandra. Her brother Wilhelm, married great duchess Olga Konstantinovna and became
the king of Hellenes - George I and thus the ancestor of the present Greek dynasty. The younger
sister - Thyra married Crown Prince Ernest Augustus of Hanover, 3rd Duke of Cumberland and
Teviotdale. King Christian IX named his daughters: Alexandra - "my beautiful daughter",
Dagmar - "my clever daughter" and Thyra - "my kind daughter". The younger brother - prince
Valdemar who died in 1939, was grandfather of Anna - the queen of Romania
